Radiant heat is a sustainable method of heating that provides luxurious warmth more efficiently than any other known heating technology. While radiant heat has only been recently adopted by homeowners throughout Northern America, the technology has been around a long time. According to archeologists, radiant heat was actually being used in Asia as early as 5,000 B.C. But the Romans took radiant heat to the next level with their hypocaust heating systems. Floors were built on a series of short pillars that allowed the space under the floor to be heated. A furnace would heat air which was then circulated through the space before exiting the flues in the roof.

Electric radiant heat systems force energy through a network of conductive material to create resistance, or heat (typically heat resistance cable), that is embedded under the floor. (Line-voltage systems are the most commonly used, but Warmzone also offers low-voltage floor heating systems.) Each zone, or room, is controlled by its own thermostat, so rooms can be heated precisely as needed, making radiant floor heating systems extremely efficient. Unlike forced-air systems where heat escapes from closed vents, or blows into a room before rising quickly to the top, virtually no energy is wasted with radiant heat.

In addition to offering luxurious, energy-efficient warmth, electric radiant floor heating systems are also maintenance free. There is no need to change filters and there are no unsightly vents or registers. The systems operate silently and discreetly, providing warmth exactly where you need in your home.

Heated Floor Options

The most common heating elements used with radiant floor heating systems are heat resistance cables. The two premier cable systems are ComfortTile and In-Slab™ systems. The ComfortTile systems utilize cable that is only about 1/8-inch in diameter, and is available in individual cable lengths or pre-spaced in mats. The mats have an adhesive backing so they can be rolled out and secured to the sub-floor quickly and easily. This convenient, and highly effective system is Warmzone's most popular floor heating solution. ComfortTile systems are easy to customize, and are well suited for heating ceramic tile, vinyl tile, marble and stone floors, as well as a wide range of other applications.

ComfortTile heat cable is also often used with the Prodeso® membrane system. The Prodeso system features a polypropylene uncoupling and waterproofing membrane that is laid out over the subfloor, and then ComfortTile heat cable is placed in the membrane's pre-engineered channels. The channels ensure that the cable is secure and properly spaced. Installers find the Prodeso system beneficial when installing floor heating in difficult subfloors without movement or expansion joints in the screed. The membrane is ¼-inch (5.5mm) thick and has square shaped reliefs with rounded corners that comprise the channels for the heating cable.

In-Slab heat cable is designed for installations in concrete slabs. To withstand the demands of fresh concrete pours the cable is considerably thicker than the ComfortTile cable. In-Slab consists of a twin-conductor, single-point connection cable, and is the most recommended system for heating basement and cement floors. The heat cable is secured to remesh and then the concrete slab is poured over the cable. In-Slab floor heating systems are extremely efficient, and provide homeowners with a reliable, affordable solution for providing comfortable warmth to chilly basement floors.

Another outstanding floor heating solution is the FilmHeat™ floor heating system. This remarkable radiant heat system consists of advanced heating panels that are thinner than a credit card. The flexible, lightweight panels are just 0.016-inch thick, and provide the best option for heating virtually all types of floating floors. Installing a FilmHeat floor heating system requires no floor buildup and has proven to be one of the best values for heating laminate and floating floors. The panels can be cut to the desired length onsite and then easily secured to the subfloor. The floating floor is installed directly over the panels without the need of thinset or mortar.

A variation of FilmHeat is also available to heat existing floors. This system, known as RetroHeat® consists of similar heating panels, which are stapled up between the floor joists. (To install this system, you must have access to the floor joists, either through a crawl space or basement.) Batt insulation is then installed over the heating element to direct all of the warmth upward to heat the existing floor. RetroHeat offers one of the most affordable and efficient ways to add the luxurious warmth of radiant heat to an existing floor without any major remodeling. The RetroHeat system can effectively warm a variety types of flooring, and the heating element carries a 25-year manufacturer warranty.

Warmzone carries several other types of floor heating systems, including the low-voltage FloorHeat STEP® system and FoilHeat™. As an industry leader, Warmzone offers one of the largest selections of radiant floor heating systems on the market. In addition to offering the most trusted floor heating systems in the industry, Warmzone also provides the latest in thermostats, sensors, and other components.
